The native people are not allowed to go on with old habits like hunting and cutting wood, and they are still looking for other economical activities. Agriculture and touristic establishments have employed a part of the local workers, who have little school education and even include many adults that are not able to read and write. Problems like unemployment, alcoholism and drugs are growing as a consequence of the social and economic changes that are taking place in our region.

The Escola Rural Dendê da Serra is situated on a farm 3 km away from Serra Grande village, and the pupils come from the countryside as well as from the village itself, and most of the families have a very low income. The children lack adequate material conditions and good nutrition at their homes, they are very active and find it hard to concentrate on school tasks. On the other hand, they usually show surprising psysical skills and manual abilities, much knowledge about nature and a great artistic and musical potential. The evident Indian, European and African heritage is another special characteristic of our multicoloured school community
